Voice of Warning

April 16, 2012

"And the voice of warning shall be unto all people, by the mouths of my disciples, whom I have chosen in these last days." (D&C 1:4)

This week is one of those weeks where "a voice of warning" seems to be the theme. We were teaching a lesson on Tuesday evening when my phone received three different messages. We were wondering what the elders needed. We finished our lesson and went out to the car. When we checked the message list it was all family back home. That is a chilling feeling. You know something is up, but have no idea what it is. We called the last number that came in and Alan told us, "Grandma had a heart attack and went to the hospital."  We asked, "Grandma Sheffer or Grandma Duncan?" He said Grandma Duncan. That set a lot of calls in motion to find out what we could. We also wanted to help get the news out. It wasn't easy to get any information about what was going on. Finally we called the hospital. When we were able to talk with Flora at the hospital, we were comforted. What really helped us though were the calls from Esther and Rebecca keeping us updated. She is home now and says, "I am going to forget this happened. We were able to skype with her.

Then there was Wednesday. We went to the hospital to visit a sick investigator. After leaving we got a call from her son, who had our number. He said that his mom was watching TV at the hospital after we left and a tornado warning for Visalia interrupted her program. She wanted to warn us. She knew we were out in the weather. Earlier the Zone Leader called saying a rain and hail storm may come through.. We called the Zone Leader and told him about the warning on TV. He felt it wasn't going to be that bad. Then we got a call from the last family we baptized, telling us that Visalia will probably have a tornado. We rushed home and checked the internet. The warning was there. We called back the Zone Leader and told him to call all the missionaries and have them seek cover until 4:30. That was the time the warning was set to elapse. He did. Nothing came through except for a pretty good thunderstorm, but there was a lot of excitement.

We have a sweet lady who has a baptismal date for the 30 of June. She works nights and that date was the first three day weekend that she has off so she can be awake during the day and have her family there. That will be a long wait but we will do all we can to support her.

This last Saturday April 14, 2012 we were called to an all mission conference again where we had D. Todd Christofferson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles coming. He was here to do a Stake Conference in Hanford a city southwest of Visalia. We haven't had time to ponder the message he gave. Sister Sheffer traced her hand in her scriptures in Ephesians 4:11 in the New Testament where it says, "And he gave some apostles." She did the same thing in March when L. Tom Perry of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles visited the mission. Why did she trace her hand, because each Apostle took the time to speak to each missionary and shake their hands. Wow, two Apostles in two months. These are moments to be cherished.

We are still learning so much and praying to know how we can serve in the best way. We pray for you all and a grateful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ.    Elder and Sister Sheffer

Pictures-- Elder Sheffer was on his first mission with an Elder Wright. We have two Elder Wrights in our zone now so he looked up Elder Blake Wright from his first mission and called with him.

This is the first time we have seen artichokes growing. The plants are huge.

Okay, Sister Sheffer needed to lay down for a quick naps.
