This week was a week of teaching spirits in prison. It started on Sunday when the bishop asked us to take a homeless woman, who had come into the church, to the prison the next morning. We said we would. He then told us that we would have to pick her up at the homeless shelter at 6:00 a.m. You need to remember that we just moved our clocks up an hour. So, it was really like picking her up at 5:00 a. m.. And we take about 45 minutes to get ready. We were pretty tired when we drove to the shelter and found her on the street in the cold. As she got in she told us she had the flu and had a rough night. Driving her out was much more of an adventure than we should talk about, so let's just say we were glad to arrive. It was 30 minutes to check in time and she said they wouldn't let anyone go in early. Then she told us she needed to go to the bathroom. We had to drive back into town, take her to a gas station then back to the prison. We barely made it in time. She said to wait for her in case her paper work was not in order and they wouldn't take her. We ask her, "Where will we take you." She didn't know. After 20 minutes the sheriff told us to leave.
We have been busy working with recent converts getting family names to take to the temple. We helped the Sandivals find 4 names. Itha Jack discovered three people have been entering names in New Family Search on her line in just in the last six months. She was so excited. She found 12 names. We went with Itha to the temple where she was baptized for her mother, grandmother and a great aunt. The men's name she had were her husband who pasted away two years ago and eight uncles. The Sandivals were not able to go because both of their mothers are in the hospital. We helped to do baptisms for the dead with the youth that night also. So we had over 330 baptisms Friday.
Saturday was a baptism of Danielle Lewis who is the granddaughter of Bill and Florine Burcham. This is a couple Elder Sheffer visited thirteen times on his first mission and Florine has been to church three times now after thirty years away and we are still teaching Bill.
Danielle Lewis asked Elder Sheffer to do her baptism and when we were ready to take pictures we had a visit from Earl and Anna Cropper a couple from our home ward who are serving a mission in the California, San Fernando Mission. They were traveling through to Sacramento to see a nephew receive the Melchizedek Priesthood. We were so happy to see them. In the excitement Sister Sheffer put the cell phone in Elder Sheffer's baptismal pants and yes, it was baptized. The phone was found hours later and is in a bag of rice. We reactivated the Utah track phone and we hope the mission phone will dry out.
Sunday was the baptism of Victor Eastland. His adoptive parents where there and his father baptized him after being on a band tour with their youngest son. Victor was adopted when he was seventeen from an orphanage in Kazikhstan , a country next to Russian where we visited twenty years ago. It was amazing and the spirit was especially strong. The bishop's wife Lorry Frost made Russian beet soup and meat pies. Another sister made candy bar cookies. We feasted on good food and the spirit.
A member asked us if we could watch TV. We said we could, but why would we want to? He said BYU played basketball last night. Elder Sheffer said, "And they won after coming back from a 25 point deficit." He said, "How did you know that?" Elder Sheffer said, "We preach our gospel and the people we meet preach their gospel."
We have been blest so much this week. Our hearts are full of gratitude for the gospel. We have shed many tears of joy and have seen many miracles. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saint is the only true and living church on the earth today and Heavenly Father loves all of his children.
Bless You Elder and Sister Sheffer
