Fwd: A Fast Week

A Fast Week April 23, 2012

Monday turned out to be a hard day as usual. Cleaning and preparing for the rest of the week as well as washing and waxing the car. That night Elder Sheffer was feeling dizzy. Tuesday morning it was worse. We had oatmeal because it's hard to eat most things when you are spinning. Elder Sheffer lost his breakfast plus a little more. Off we went to district meeting. Sister Sheffer had to drive so we weren't driving in circles. After district meeting Elder Sheffer asked for a blessing. The whole district helped. They told him that he would recover and not miss any of the appointments we had. At lunch he was so dizzy he couldn't even drink water. This had him very nervous since we had a dinner appointment that night with a family that used to do his shirts for him when he was a young elder. If not for the blessing we would have cancelled. When we got there the dizziness was gone and we had a great meal and a message. He has been a little weak this week, but no more dizziness. So, Tuesday turned out to be a fast day for Elder Sheffer.

On Thursday we decided to fast for some investigators that were having a rough time. Elder Sheffer had more of a struggle with this than he thought he would. We both made it though, and things went well. Upon completion of the fast Elder Sheffer declared this week's letter "A Fast Week".

We were reading Grandma Sheffer's newsletter this morning. We asked each other if we should ask her to ship a bottle of her homemade root beer to share on the day of her birthday party. We decided that would be a bad idea. The Post Office has laws about shipping explosive packages, controlled substances, and toxic materials. Also, if it did make it to us without blowing up and covering an entire mail truck with root beer, could we drink it as set apart missionaries?

This week has been very hot! It hit 100 for the first time this year on Sunday. We visited seven wards on Sunday. We didn't all the attend meetings. We just greeted and ran to the next ward to contact people. We went to two sacrament meetings, taught one Sunday school class, and attended one Priesthood/ Relief Society. THANK HEAVEN FOR AIR CONDITIONING! One of the sacrament meetings didn't have the air conditioning working. Elder Sheffer was able to use his "Man Fan from Japan" but that wasn't near enough.

The sweet lady who we baptized in February invited us to her home to have dinner on her birthday. She said she thought, "Should I spend my birthday alone like last year, or invite the Sheffers over?" We are glad she thought of us. Sister Sheffer spread the word. So, everyone knew her birthday was coming.

We had a church tour with a young couple. That is where you show them the chapel, foyers, pictures of Christ, and the baptismal font. We hoped they would feel a powerful spirit. You get the idea. Well not thinking things through clearly, we scheduled it on the same night and time as Young Men/Women's. If you are hoping for a calm peaceful feeling it is harder with laughter, running and balls flying past your head. We couldn't show them the font, because they were having opening exercises in that room. You think that would ruin the tour, but it didn't. We found an empty room and had a great discussion. It was a much different spirit than what we expected, but it was the Lord's spirit just the same. And maybe that is what couple needed.

We also went to a baseball game for the son of a less active family. The boy was 10. We were able to sit through four innings before needing to go. It was one to one and the whole time we were there only one child hit the ball.

We receive emails from a couple we met in the MTC. This is from their letter this week. They are serving in New Zealand.

"We were able to have our General Conference this weekend, and enjoyed it so much. It was a landmark conference in my eyes. The  messages were so well prepared and just what is needed in our tumultuous times. If you weren't able to see it, catch it online at LDS.org. It was amazing. I remember one talk that touched on the subject of writing missionaries letters... not just emails.... I thought that was some inspired information that I hope reached the thought processes of loved ones at home. But we like the emails as well. And the occasional skype experiences. It would be fun to get a letter in the mail once in a while though... Pres Hirschi comes back from the mailbox empty handed most days. We won't talk about the many letters we wrote to our missionaries when they were on their missions.... one a week minimum, .. but we aren't talking about that... nope, not going to say another word."

Oh, we should put our address here just in case there is anyone out there who is feeling a little guilty. (1243 N. Cato Visalia, CA 93292) We love emails too.

We love you all. Sorry, no pictures this week.   Love Elder and Sister Sheffer
