Digging for California Gold

Gold Digging in California                                                                                                              August 12, 2012

Dear Family and Friends,

This week has been a great week. We helped the young Elders with Two baptisms. It was an older man and his wife. They were able to stand and bear testimony at their own baptism. Rick and Joan Frost are now members of the 3rd Ward. We were able to teach them one lesson and to sit with them at an earlier baptism. Sister Sheffer talked with her at the baptism and explained a lot to her. The spirit was strong. That helped him to decide that baptism was important.

We were teaching a lesson up in Three Rivers, CA and they treated us to tacos. Elder Sheffer bit a little too hard and broke a tooth. This is just after having a new gold crown put on by a dentist for just the cost of lab fees. He then checked Sister Sheffer's teeth to make sure they were okay. So, we go back again. We told him that he was getting a lot more blessings from helping us than he probably wanted. He has been a dentist for many years and is very good. He has a lot of patients and has to squeeze us in. He told Elder Sheffer that he would need another gold crown. So, Elder Sheffer should return with some California gold. We were digging for investigators and struck gold. We aren't really happy buying gold while it is so high in price. We are also not happy with the storage location, or the discomfort of securing it. But California is somehow all about gold.

Sister Sheffer finally had a haircut. The weather here is very hot. When we got into our car Saturday the thermometer said 111 degrees. Her haircut doesn't look like a big change but she took off 8 inches.  Elder Sheffer is looking great with a part in his hair. The Elders often compliment him on it. It isn't easy to have a part with so little hair on top.  A part in the Elder's hair is California Fresno Mission Culture so all elders are asked to have a part.

There is a brother in the Exeter ward who asked Sister Sheffer to sing in a quartette. She loved the opportunity to sing in a group and the song happened to be one of her favorite hymns "Be Still My Soul." It was very touching. At the end of our meetings in the 3rd ward yesterday we were asked by the Ward to sing with the youth for the baptism. Elder Sheffer even sang. They called us a youth choir.

We have been so blest with fresh fruits and vegetables. We have been given grapefruit, oranges, apples, peaches, nectarines, plums, melons, grapes, tomatoes, peppers, broccoli, eggplant, and herbs. It has been much appreciated. In the scriptures it says, "Take no thought for what ye shall eat." This valley has such amazing bounty.

We have had a transfer and we have several new missionaries. It was sweet sorrow to say goodbye to two missionaries that have been here the whole time we have been here in Visalia. They are great missionaries and have given incredible service. They have finished their missions and the Lord will bless them greatly.

We are doing very well as a zone this month. It is a constant struggle to stay focused and be aware of missionary opportunities. What a tremendous blessing it is to focus only on the Lord's work. There is great power in this work and great joy. Please reach out to others in friendship and share your examples.        God Bless You All     Elder and Sister Sheffer
